slide into 2024 with an all-vinyl mix of the lazy persuasion
We heard Reenie is an obsessive vinyl collector, so we asked her put together our first mix of 2024. Turns out the chatter rings true, with the Eora selector diving deep into her collection to craft a moody session of, in her own words, “drone, straight up ambient, tweaky chill stuff and smooth acoustic percussion.” Dig in…
Hey Reenie, how has your summer been treating you? What have you been getting up to? I recently moved into a new place on the beach so I’ve been spending a lot of time outside, which is new for me. I’ve also been trying to build a home studio which has had its difficulties but hopefully it’ll be worth it! I’m not the biggest fan of summer, I’m keen for it to get a little colder so I can wear more jackets and pants, for me it’s all about outfit options.
How did you decide to approach your Lazydaze mix? Was there a concept behind it? Most of the time I tend to put on an album from beginning to end - the ultimate lazy listen is no mixing. I wanted to round the mix out like you’re finally getting up to make yourself some tea by the end. I buy heaps of ambient/electronica records so I thought about trying to capture a bit of some different flavours - drone, straight up ambient, tweaky chill stuff and smooth acoustic percussion. I wanted the challenge of vinyl only and to showcase some of my favourite Aussie/NZ artists (Leo James, Greville, Eden burns).
Are there any particularly special tracks or moments in there for you? I’ve got one of my favourite tunes from Mary Lattimore in there: “till a mermaid drags you under,” she’s a harpist who puts records out on Ghostly. It’s a bit psychy and you can hear the definition in the strings really well because she runs her harp through pedals and loops them in real time. I got this record autographed when I saw her live a few months ago so it’s one of my most cherished items. I’ve been following her for years.
I also open with a record that’s part of a zodiac spoken word series soundtracked by none other than Mort Garson! I’m not an astrology person but I bought the Pisces record to match me. I kind of want to collect them all now but they’re super tricky to find. I know Gus (Dreems) has a few!
It’s a relaxed Sunday afternoon at home. Which album are you reaching for? Probably the White Light/Light Heat by velvet underground or something on the label music from memory, depending on if I’m going out or not. I’m a huge advocate for compilations, especially stuff on ‘Another Late Night/LateNightTales’- my faves at the moment are Kid Loco and Hot Chip. If I'm honest, I have a few Monty Python records, I love throwing them on when it's a stay at home alone evening.
You’re hosting a dinner party and can invite any three people, alive or dead. Who are you choosing and why? Paul McCartney, James Murphy and Jarvis Cocker. It’d be great if they were all dead, it would provide a great topic of conversation and it’d look like I had them assassinated to be there as a talking point. Very artistic. (but seriously I love them all and do not condone artistic assassinations).
