synth driven, melodic ambient from A legend of australian pop music

Recorded live at the final Audamus event aboard the HMAS Vampire in June, Kim Moyes of The Presets (aka K.I.M) delivers a sublime set of ambient electronica before finishing with a lesser known Aussie classic from the 1970’s band, The Reels.

How did you decide to approach your Audamus set? Was there a concept or idea behind it?

I have a heap of ambient records and CDs so I thought this was a great opportunity to dig through those and play some actual discs for once. It’s been about ten years since I’ve played vinyl or CDs out in the wild. 80% of the set was CD and the rest was vinyl with a couple off the USB stick just for good measure. I had to do a lot of prep to figure out what what I didn’t want to play and that took hours.

Are there any particularly special tracks or moments in there for you? ‘Kitchen Man’ by The Reels was a great track to end with. I’d never heard it nor of the band before.

Yeah that’s a great track from a great Aussie band. I played a track that’s pretty special to me, its the Marimba based track in the middle of the set that’s called ‘Low’ from my first band, Prop.

You recently scored the music for the ABC Science series ‘Phenomena’. How did this project come about and how did you approach making the music? Did you find it a more difficult approach making to accompany visual stimulus as opposed to making music solely for listening?

I was approached by the producers of the show and what they pitched me seemed really fascinating and right up my alley. I’ve never really done anything quite like it before, so the learning curb was steep but at the same time working with the director Josef Gatti was really easy and fun. I actually found it way easier than making festival bangers, funnily enough. There is more scope to lean into some different and more eccentric ideas.

What’s your all time favourite song, soundtrack, album or compilation for chilling out?

I’m a massive fan of the Nils Frahm album Felt. It was recorded incredibly quietly in an apartment, kind of ASMR vibe. The last track on that album. ‘More,’ is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard.

What’s coming up for you in the future? Any exciting musical or artistic projects you can share?

I’m working away producing other artists and making my own stuff. The Presets are also toiling away on some exciting projects for later in the year. And I’m having a lot of fun with my record label, Here To Hell. We have some awesome new stuff lined up for the second half of the year, so keep an ear out!
