Can you tell us a bit about your journey into electronic music and DJing? When did you first discover electronic music?
It all started with drum & bass around age sixteen, but I didn’t start mixing until early 2011 when a mate dumped his CDJ800s at my house. Living in a small coastal town like Noosa, there wasn’t many great options for nightlife so my DJing past is not for the lactose intolerant (cheeeese!). It wasn’t until mid 2015 when I moved to Sydney and the SASH crew took me under their wing that my taste for underground sounds really flourished.
How did you decide to approach your mix? Was there a concept behind it?
I’m a big fan of Lazydaze and after listening to the contributions to the series from good friends Phil Shaw, Phil Smart and Marley Sherman, I was inspired to contribute my own. The concept behind the mix was to showcase the slower sounds of artists usually known for much higher energy and faster paced sounds. I’d been collecting these tracks over the last year or so and Lazydaze was the perfect platform to share them through.
Are there any particularly special tracks or moments in there for you?
The final track of the mix is pretty special to me simply because it’s one of those tunes where it doesn’t matter how many times I hear it, the goosebumps are present. Everything about it - from the Phil Collins inspired, reverb heavy percussion to the retro bass stabs and melancholy pads - invokes a cinematic feeling of a finale, making it a perfect closing track in my eyes.
What’s your most memorable moment behind the decks?
Definitely my farewell set at SASH by Day in March this year, which turned out to be the last one since the Covid shitstorm hit. Taking the reigns to unleash my most special records and secret weapons upon the most up-for-it crowd you’ll ever find in Sydney with some of my closest mates from my five years in Sydney right by my side, was a two hour feeling that will be hard to beat.
Name your all time favourite ambient/downbeat/electronica/experimental track or album.
I can’t go past ‘The Golden Escalator’ by Gene On Earth.
