Meditative ambient and melodic synth to soothe our angsty times.

Mysterious Australian producer BRUX removes her veil of dark pop-infused house to reveal a love for soothing ambient, with a beautiful mixtape featuring the likes of Gaussian Curve, Brian Eno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Floating Points and the late Ennio Morricone.

How has isolation life been treating you? How have you been keeping productive? Isolation has been interesting for sure. My productivity comes and goes and I try not to put too much pressure on myself to create during this time. I’ve worked on some new club tracks and also a handful of ambient lullabies which has been fun!

I’ve been reading The Power of Now by Eckart Tolle (very relevant!) and enjoying other creative outlets besides music too; dressmaking and cultivating an organic and sustainable vegetable garden have been giving me great joy of late. I’m also focusing my energy on learning how to live more sustainably and efficiently...hence the gardening! Aside from all of these things that make it sound like I’m having the time of my life, I’m also quite anxious and emotionally exhausted, which is why I made this particular mixtape.

How did you decide to approach your Lazydaze mix? Was there a concept behind it? I listen to a lot of meditative/instrumental calming music on a daily basis to settle my mind and body. During this pandemic even more so - so it made sense to me to compile these tracks that are on high rotation at the moment. I hope it brings a sense of calm.

Are there any particularly special tracks or moments in there for you? The Gigi Masin track ‘The Sea of Sands’ is off his 1986 LP Wind (the whole record is beautiful) and since  hearing it for the first time in January 2019 (thanks to a recommendation from a friend), it’s on rotation weekly! His other LP Talk to the Sea is another favourite of mine. I’m very inspired by Masin and plan to release an ambient album of my own soon.

What’s on the cards for BRUX in the near future? Any new releases or post-COVID plans? I have a bunch of fun club remixes in the pipeline that drop soon. One in particular is a Tokimonsta track that I’m very pumped for! After that there’ll be more Brux originals dropping. I had plans to move to New York back in March, so that will be pushed to 2021 at this stage. In the meantime I’ll be looking for inspiration and creating in whatever shape or form that may take.

What’s your all time favourite chill out/downtempo/ambient…

Song - ‘Thursday Afternoon’ by Brian Eno. 1 hour in length!

Album - Long Ambients 1: Calm. Sleep by Moby. Sleeping pills in the form of music.
