A wonderfully eclectic and heady expedition way out west.

Bristol bred DJ and producer, Anjunadeep family member and one half of celebrated electronic act Way Out West, Jody Wisternoff, takes us on a beautiful Cafe Del Mar-inspired journey of his favourite chill out tracks, original productions, Way Out West classics and some David Bowie & Brian Eno throwbacks.

How has isolation life been treating you? How have you been keeping productive on the music/DJing front and what have you been able to spend more time on that you wouldn’t normally have? Yeah it's been ok, thanks mate. I've had plenty of time to mess around in the studio as you can imagine. One fun thing I sorted out is a way to kind of play live, where I can jam and record ideas on the fly without having to look at the computer (while dancing like a Dad haha!). I’ve also been cracking on with Anjunadeep 12 (the next mix comp alongside James Grant), doing a bunch of remixes and also some new Way Out West stuff with Nick.

How did you decide to approach your Lazydaze mix? Was there a concept behind it? I wanted to kind of do a mix similar in style to the old Cafe Del Mar series. I didn't worry about BPM or any of that stuff - I just selected a bunch of my favourite chillout tracks, plus a few Way Out West classics, and made sure they filled together harmonically and in a sequentially pleasing way.

Are there any particularly special tracks or moments in there for you? I really love the David Bowie tracks, both taken from his amazing album Low, which he wrote with Brian Eno whilst living in Berlin and hoofing loads of drugs! While on tour I used to listen to the track ‘Warszawa’ quite often, as the plane would be landing in far off lands. It really sets a mood and also reminds me of my childhood, as I think my parents were really into it too.

What equipment did you use to record the mix? Ableton Live. Believe it or not, I don't own any CDJs! I do have a pair of Technics though.

You recently released a new album called Nightwhisper. How is your approach to making music different to when working as Way Out West with Nick? I've gotta do twice the amount of work! But seriously, a lot of my solo stuff is less sample based than the WOW material, which has always relied more on sound collage from obscure vinyl (Nick is an expert crate digger) to create atmospherics rather than synthesis - which is more my technique.

What’s your all time favourite chill out/downtempo track? ‘Autumn Leaves’ by Coldcut.
